Cuomo May Face Primary Challenger in 2018

Gov. Cuomo may face one or more primary challengers in 2018, when he seeks a third term as Governor.

Former State Senator Terry Gipson (D – Rhinebeck) is considering challenging the Governor.  He has told progressive groups that the state “deserves a real Democratic governor that will lead our party and move true Democratic policy forward.”

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, who has been openly critical of the Governor, is also considering a 2018 run.  She is prohibited from seeking a third term as Syracuse Mayor.  She has advocated for the state to provide money to local governments to make infrastructure investments, and has criticized the Governor’s economic development efforts.

In 2014, Zephyr Teachout unsuccessfully challenged Cuomo from the left; she gained just under one-third of the vote.
