Last week, a coalition of farm groups wrote to Gov. Cuomo, asking him to reverse his decision not to have the state mount a defense against a lawsuit brought by the New York Civil Liberties Union. The lawsuit is intended to make it easier for farmworkers to bargain collectively.
We join with the agricultural community – which faces many, many challenges operating successfully in New York State – in urging the Governor to defend against this lawsuit. We fear that the state’s high taxes, poor regulatory environment and upcoming increase in the state’s minimum wage provide massive challenges for the state’s farmers. Enabling farmworkers to collectively bargain could put many farms — especially smaller ones – over the edge.
