According to a report in the New York Times, Gov. Cuomo will direct the Public Service Commission to mandate that half of all power consumed by New Yorkers be generated from renewable sources by 2030. Currently, about 26% of the power used in the state comes from renewable sources.
Gov. Cuomo is expected to make reducing carbon dioxide emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy a focus of his state-of-the-state address, which is scheduled for January 6, 2016.
Environmental groups expressed support for the proposal, as did a trade association that represents power generating companies.
