Last week, Gov., Cuomo announced that he has signed into law eight bills that are designed to protect and further women’s equality in the state. The new laws are intended to achieve pay equity, strengthen human trafficking laws and protections for domestic violence victims and end pregnancy discrimination in all workplaces. (Watch the Governor’s remarks here.)

The new laws:

  • prohibit employers from paying women less than men for performing the same work;
  • provide protections for sexual harassment victims;
  • allow successful plaintiffs to recover attorneys’ fees in employment or credit discrimination cases based on sex;
  • prohibit employment discrimination based on familial status;
  • prohibit landlords from discriminating against domestic violence victims;
  • strengthening order-of-protection laws;
  • strengthen the state’s human trafficking laws; and
  • require employers to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnant employees.
