Last week, the Empire Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) criticized a request for proposal process for the renovation at the state fairgrounds outside of Syracuse that was issued but later amended to exclude non-unionized companies from winning contracts. They are urging the state not to require the use of Project Labor Agreements, which would exclude the majority of local workers and contractors from bidding the work.

We support their call for an open contracting process on this and other state-funded projects. While we support the state’s decision to invest in assets such as the State Fairgrounds, such projects must be undertaken in a manner that ensures the best value for taxpayers.
