Last Wednesday, the state Gaming Facility Location Board recommended that Tioga Downs, a race track facility located in the Southern Tier, be permitted to formally apply for a commercial casino license. The board’s action comes 10 months after it rejected Tioga Downs’ original bid for a casino license.

The Board’s initial rejection of Tioga Downs meant that there would be no commercial casino in the Binghamton region. The Tioga Downs CEO lashed out at the Governor regarding the decision, and in January the Governor called on the Board to begin a new casino siting process for the “true Southern Tier” with the goal of recommending a project for the region and issuing the final license. Tioga Downs was the only entity that applied.

The Board’s approval moves Tioga Downs to the next step of the application process, in which the state Gaming Commission can officially award the license. That is expected to occur before the end of 2015.
