Candidates Announces Bids for 52nd Senate District
Former Broome County Executive and DMV Commissioner Barbara Fiala, a Democrat, formally announced her candidacy for the 52nd Senate District seat in the Southern Tier, which was recently vacated by former Senator Tom Libous. The Republicans announced today that they have chosen Broome County Undersheriff Fred Akshar as their candidate for the seat.
Minor party candidates are also expected to contest for the open seat. Rich Purtell, a sales engineer for Climate Control Technologies, has expressed interest in running with the support of the Libertarian Party and Denver Jones, who challenged Sen. Libous in the 2014 GOP primary, is also expected to pursue a candidacy.
While this is seat has been held by the Republicans for more than 100 years, the Democrats believe that they have an opportunity to win the seat. The seat is an important one, because the Senate Republicans currently hold 31 of the 61 occupied Senate seats, one short of an outright majority.
