On Tuesday, Gov. Cuomo announced that he has signed into law a bill that is designed to curtail sexual assault and rape on private college campuses.
The new law has a “yes means yes” standard for consent that requires a clear, affirmative agreement between partners. It also establishes A Students’ Bill of Rights, which campuses will be required to distribute to all students in order to specifically inform sexual violence victims of their legal rights and how they may access appropriate resources, requires training for law enforcement, faculty and students, and imposes new reporting requirements for campuses regarding data on incidents of sexual violence.
Gov. Cuomo said:
“I am proud to sign into law the most aggressive policy in the nation to fight against sexual assault on college campuses. Today, New York is making a clear and bold statement: sexual violence is a crime, and from now on in this state it will be investigated and prosecuted like one.”
