Last week, Judge Susan Phillips Read said that she will leave the Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, in August.  Her 14-year term would not expire until January 2017.  Judge Read’s resignation will leave just one justice on the Court who was appointed by a Republican governor.

Judge Read’s departure will give Gov. Cuomo the opportunity to make two appointments to the court in the near future.  Gov. Cuomo will also have the opportunity to appoint a new Chief Judge, as current Chief Judge Lippman is required by law to retire at the end of this year.
