According to a report released this week by the Lawsuit Reform Alliance of New York (LRANY), political spending by the state’s trial lawyers grew by 27% in 2014 over 2013.

The report looks at plaintiffs’ lawyers, their lobbying groups and associated Political Action Committees (PACs).  It finds that they spent a $3.09 million on lobbying and campaign contributions in 2014.

Unshackle Upstate is a member of LRANY.  One of the issues that we’ve constantly highlighted in our advocacy efforts is the need for the state to reform its “Scaffold Law,” which holds contractors and property owners 100% liable for any gravity-related accident – even if the employee was at fault. It has been well documented that the Scaffold Law drives up construction costs.  And it is illogical, because the law doesn’t provide any incentive for workers to follow safety procedures.

We will keep pushing for the Legislature to reform the Scaffold Law.  We’re confident that lawmakers can put in place a statute that protects workers, but also protects taxpayers as well.
