Last week, the state Gaming Commission unanimously adopted a Request for Applications (RFA) for a commercial casino in the Southern Tier. Applications are due in July, and a decision is expected this fall.
Last December, casino siting board recommended that the Lago Resort & Casino (which his in Seneca County) as the only applicant that should receive a commercial casino license in the “Southern Tier” region. But after Southern Tier leaders objected that the Lago project is not actually in the Southern Tier, Gov. Cuomo urged the Gaming Commission and the siting board to issue a new RFA for a casino in the “true Southern Tier.”
Many local political and business leaders are supporting Tioga Downs in their effort to obtain a commercial casino license. Tioga Downs has announced a commitment of some $1 million per year to help spur economic growth in the region. While awarding a casino license to Tioga Downs is not the solution to the area’s economic challenges, it would create jobs and new tax revenues.
