Last week, the City of Binghamton launched a website (Binghamtonhalfbillion.com) through which the public can share suggestions on how the city should approach the state’s competition for $1.5 billion in upstate aid, which Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced last month.

Under Gov. Cuomo’s Upstate New York Economic Revitalization Competition plan, which is part of his proposed state budget, seven Upstate regions will compete for three awards of up to $500 million. Each region must submit a plan for how they would use the money. In addition to the Southern Tier, the other regions eligible for the competition are Mid-Hudson, Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, Central New York, North Country and Finger Lakes.

If the plan is approved by the Legislature, each regional submission will go through its respective the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC).
