Last week, the Gaming Facility Location Board met and unanimously approved Gov. Cuomo’s request that it solicit new casino proposals for the Southern Tier region.

Last month, the Board recommended the granting of only three upstate casino licenses — in Schenectady, in the Town of Thompson in the Catskills, and in the Finger Lakes community of Tyre.  The Board chose not to pick a fourth project allowed under the law, passing on Tioga Downs and Traditions Resort & Casino in the Southern Tier. That decision led to many politicians and residents of the economically ailing Southern Tier to complain that their region was left out.

The Board’s decision to re-open the bidding process has led officials in other areas, including the Catskills and Orange County, to request the opportunity to bid on a fourth casino license.
