According to the state Department of Labor, the New York City region saw a 2.2% increase in job growth over the last 12 months, while upstate New York grew by just 0.4% during that period.

The state’s overall unemployment rate dropped from 6.2% to 6% over the last year.  This represents an increase of 110,000 private-sector jobs.  Unfortunately, the majority of these jobs were created in the downstate region.  Upstate saw a net increase of just 10,500 jobs over the last year.   In fact, Rochester, Utica-Rome and Syracuse, reported negative job growth.

These numbers represent yet another reminder of the challenges we face Upstate in terms of growing our economy.
