The SUNY Board of Trustees has approved a request for a 17.5% state aid increase from Gov. Cuomo and the state Legislature for the 2015-16 fiscal year, which starts on April 1st. SUNY is seeking about a $300 million increase in state aid, to about $2 billion overall.

If approved, the funds would pay for negotiated salary increases for the colleges’ unions, and provide additional state support for the state’s 30 community colleges, among other things.

The request comes as Gov. Cuomo has directed the state agencies that he controls to keep their budgets flat for the next fiscal year. The Governor has again said that he plans to limit the state’s spending increase to less than 2% next year.
