A Siena College Poll released last week found that three first-term Democratic State Senators trail their Republican challengers in races that are expected to help determine which party controls the Senate in 2015-16.

In the 55th Senate District in the Rochester area, Republican Rich Funke had a 25 percentage-point lead, 57%-32%, over Senator Ted O’Brien (D-Irondequoit). (Read the poll crosstabs here.)

In the 41st Senate District in the Hudson Valley, the poll shows Republican Sue Serino leading Democratic Senator Terry Gipson (D-Rhinebeck) 52%-40%. (Read the poll crosstabs here.)

In the 46th Senate District, the poll shows Republican George Amedore leading State Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk (D-Duanesburg) by 10 percentage points, 52%-42%. In 2010,

(Read the poll crosstabs here.) This is a rematch of the 2010 race, where Tkaczyk defeated Amedore by just 18 votes.

All three Democrats won in 2012, aided by high voter turnout in the presidential election in a state with twice as many Democrats than Republicans. While Democrats won the Senate majority at the ballot box in 2012, a group of dissent Democrats joined with Republicans to keep the Democratic conference in the Senate’s minority.
