Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Republican Rob Astorino, Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins and Libertarian Michael McDermott came to Buffalo to participate in what will likely be the only debate in this year’s raced for governor.

Both Cuomo and Astorino went on the offensive, attacking each other with charges of racism, lying and breaking the law. The Governor accused the Westchester County Executive of promoting discriminatory policies against women, minorities, immigrants and gays, and characterized Astorino’s political views as “ultraconservative.” Astorino accused the governor of “pulling the race card,” and reminded voters of the federal investigation into whether the Cuomo administration interfered with the Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption.

Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins set out his vision for a progressive “Green New Deal” agenda that would guarantee a right to a job for every New Yorker, increase the minimum wage, ban fracking, and end the use of carbon-based energy.
