New York State holds it primary elections for statewide and state legislative offices tomorrow, Sept. 9. Be sure to exercise your right to vote!
Below are the most hotly-contested primary races for State Senate Assembly seats in the Upstate region.
S.D. 60 – Erie
Incumbent Senator Mark Grisanti faces a Republican Primary challenge from attorney Kevin Stocker, while Marc Panepinto and Al Coppola will face each other for the Democratic nomination. Unshackle Upstate has endorsed Senator Grisanti and we believe him to be a valuable voice for Western New York taxpayers in the Senate.
Senator Tim Kennedy faces a rematch from Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant in this City of Buffalo dominated district. The two candidates’ 2012 race went to a recount with Kennedy emerging the victor by a few hundred votes. Only token Republican opposition exists.
A.D. 121 – Madison/Oneida
Assembly Agriculture Committee Chair and 12-term incumbent Democrat Bill Magee is being challenged by Mike Hennessy, a former Oneida County legislator. Hennessey has been endorsed by the Democratic Party in both counties.
A.D. 141 – Erie
Incumbent Democrat Crystal People-Stokes is facing a primary challenge from former State Senator Antoine Thompson. Veronica Nichols is also in the race.
A.D. 143 — Erie
This seat became vacant when Democrat Dennis Gabryszak resigned in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal. In the Democratic primary, Mark Mazurek and Camille Brandon face off. The winner will face Republican Angela Wozniak in November.
