Last week, the Lawsuit Reform Alliance of New York (LRANY) released a report which finds that trial lawyer interest groups spent $1.15 million on lobbying in 2013, a 37% increase since 2010. The report, titled “Power of Attorney: Exploring the Influence of the Trial Bar in New York State Politics” analyzes the trial bar’s lobbying and political spending.
In addition to their spending on lobbying, trial lawyers contributed $1.28 million to state candidates. Tom Stebbins, LRANY’s Executive Director, said “In sheer dollar terms, it is impossible to understate just how powerful the Trial Lawyer special interests are. They are the biggest lobby nobody’s ever heard of.”
The report supports Gov. Cuomo’s recent comment that “the trial lawyers are the single most powerful force in Albany.” Which is something that we need to change if we want to live in affordable communities.
