IDC May Challenge Incumbent Democratic Senator
State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx), head of the Senate’s Independent Democratic Caucus (IDC) which shares control of the State Senate with Republicans, said that the IDC plans to support Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant in a Democratic primary against incumbent Senator Tim Kennedy (D-Buffalo) this fall. The IDC’s support will provide her with with manpower and fundraising ability in a race expected to gain major statewide attention.
Senator Klein said that Grant’s support for abortion rights is key to the IDC’s support. Klein said that Grant has not committed to joining the IDC if she is elected to the Senate.
In 2012, Grant narrowly lost a Democratic primary to Kennedy.
Former Pataki Aid Considering Run for State Attorney General
According to a news report, former Governor George Pataki’s chief of staff is “seriously considering” a run for attorney general. Michael Battle, former US Attorney for the Western District of New York, is also reportedly considering a run for that office.
No Republican has won a statewide race in New York since Pataki’s won a third term in 2002. A non-incumbent Republican has not won a statewide race since 1994.
Paladino Says He May Run for Governor Again
At the Conservative Party’s annual political action conference in suburban Albany, 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino said that he will run for Governor again in 2014 if the Republican leadership supports Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.
