On Thursday, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) released a study that finds that legalizing mixed-martial arts (MMA) in the state would result in an additional $135 million in annual state revenue.

MMA has been banned in New York since 1997, and New York is the only state in the nation where it is banned.  Legislative efforts to legalize the sport in New York have succeeded in the Senate, but not in the Assembly.  The Senate is expected to push the issue again in 2014.

Whether or not you enjoy watching mixed-martial arts, you’ll have to agree that this is just another one of those issues where New York has fallen behind the rest of the nation – and we end up paying for it, as this activity goes on everywhere except New York.
