Last Thursday, Gov. Cuomo announced that New York State will spend $225 million on infrastructure upgrades and a facility for clean-energy research, development and manufacturing at the former Republic Steel facility in Buffalo, known as RiverBend.

Once the state has built the facility, two California-based clean energy companies, Soraa and Silevo, will invest $1.5 billion as they relocate parts of their operations to the facility.  It is expected to result in 850 permanent jobs.

Dottie Gallagher-Cohen, President & CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership said:

“This idea of manufacturing with atoms is difficult to comprehend but you need to be able to think small to understand how big the benefits to our workforce and economy will be. RiverBend will fuel Buffalo’s future with high-tech companies and the jobs they provide. This is Governor Cuomo’s vision for the Buffalo Billion Initiative coming to life.”

Unshackle Upstate is very supportive of efforts such as this, which re-purpose existing facilities and have the potential to transform the area economy.
