The state has been undertaking an environmental and health review of high-volume hydraulic fracturing, delaying the economic benefits it will bring for almost five years.
We’re now waiting for the results of a review being conducted by state Health Commissioner Nirav Shah, who has been tasked with reviewing the Department of Environmental Conservation’s recommended rules for drilling. While Commissioner Shah previously said that he was “weeks” away from finishing his review, he’s no longer making such predictions.
The people of the Southern Tier have been patient. Too patient. They deserve to know if their state government really does support their best economic development option. It is, to use an old phrase, time to “put up or shut-up”.
