Last week, the NYS Association of Counties (NYSAC) announced the “Mayday for Mandate Relief” effort, in which county leaders from around the state called on lawmakers and Gov. Cuomo to enact legislation to ban unfunded mandates.
NYSCA President Edward Diana, Orange County Executive, said:
“Our counties are cutting local services because we have to pay the state’s bills first. We need more of our local taxes to stay in our communities for local services….The cost of fixed programs like health insurance and pensions and the projected increases in other state- mandated programs make it nearly impossible to provide essential and important local services.”
