Last Wednesday, the Design‐Build Institute of America (DBIA) announced the recipients of the 2012 Distinguished Design‐Build Leadership Awards, which recognize individuals who have advanced the use of design‐build project delivery and design‐build best practices.

Design‐build is an integrated approach in which design and construction services are delivered under one contract with a single point of responsibility. Owners select design‐build to achieve best value while meeting schedule, cost and quality goals. DBIA is the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design‐build project delivery.

DBIA is honoring Gov. Cuomo because of his work to make design‐build the centerpiece of New York’s infrastructure program.  In 2011, he signed legislation authorizing the use of design‐build for New York State infrastructure projects for the first time. More recently, the Cuomo Administration included design-build in a $29.3 million contract for repairs to 13 Hudson Valley bridges.

Unshackle Upstate, working with others, was an early leader in the movement to make design-build a priority for New York.  We worked closely with the Governor’s Office as well as the Senate Majority conference to advance legislation that would help to reduce our construction costs.  We are pleased that DBIA, based on a recommendation from its Liberty Region Executive Andrew Claus, is giving this award to Governor Cuomo.

The award will be presented during the 2012 Design‐Build Conference and Expo in New Orleans, LA, on Nov. 8.
