The primary election for Senate and Assembly seats will be held on Thursday, Sept. 13. Below are some of the primary races that are expected to be competitive.

Senate Races

In the 44th Senate District in the Capital Region, incumbent Democrat Neil Breslin is being challenged by County Legislator Shawn Morse.

In the 60th Senate District in Erie County, there are primaries for both the Republican and Democratic lines.  The district has long been held by Democrats, but was won by Republican Mark Grisanti in 2010.  Grisanti is being challenged by Kevin Stocker. The Democratic primary includes former County Legislature Majority Leader Charles Swanick, attorney Michael Amodeo and former Senator Al Coppola.

Assembly Races

In Brooklyn’s 55th Assembly District, incumbent Democrat William Boyland is being challenged by six challengers.  Boyland has been indicted for bribery.

In the Bronx’s 80th District, incumbent Republican Naomi Rivera is being challenged by three candidates, including businessman Mark Gjonaj, Adam Bermudez and Irene Estrada-Rukaj.

In the Hudson Valley’s 105th Assembly District, three candidates are competing in the Republican primary to replace retiring Assemblyman Joel Miller. They are veteran and defense industry consultant Michael Kieran Lalor, former Assemblyman Patrick Manning, and Richard Wagner.

In the 133rd Assembly District, incumbent Republican Sean Hanna is running for the State Senate. Bill Nojay and Richard Burke are competing in the Republican primary to replace him.

In the 149th Assembly District in Erie County, incumbent Democrat Sean Ryan is being challenged by Kevin Gaughan and Joseph Mascia.
